Context

Control rooms are crucial in the effective management of fire command services and airport services because of their ability to centralise operations, enhance operational safety, and coordinate emergency responses. They offer real-time incident monitoring, centralised communication, and coordinated responses with multiple agencies to mitigate or manage high-consequence safety events and air traffic control. Controllers must remain alert to manage sudden events, prompting quick thinking although routine work may be monotonous.

Challenge

A fire command centre and air traffic control operator engineering manager required input on the strategies to re-design, fit out, and improve the control room centre, enhancing the operator experience while enhancing productivity, safety, engagement, and performance.

Approach

The ViVA human factors team combined their synthesis of industry standards, guidance material, scientific literature, and site visit evidence. They observed workers in their natural setting, interviewed staff, and measured dimensions and environmental conditions during different day and night shift operations.

Outcomes

ViVA developed the short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations to improve the control operation experience, including recommendations on console design and set-up, monitor positioning with alarm and communication data, monitor mounts, seating options, cable management strategies, headset use, and ambient lighting treatments. The advice included air circulation methods, noise exposure management, and strategies to enhance focused work.
