Context
River ferry transit is essential to sustainable, community-oriented, environmentally friendly, and economical public transportation. The operation and maintenance of river ferries is a highly specialised aspect of maritime services.
Challenge
A contracted staffing supplier of river ferry operators and maintainers required supportive investigations to determine injury causation, considering the contributing factors of work systems and ferry design, focusing on the engine room.
Approach
ViVA human factors teams conducted on-site hierarchical task analysis and integrated risk assessments of river ferry maintenance tasks, observing tasks, measuring work elements, and interviewing relevant staff and management. ViVA reviewed injury claims data and synthesised this data as part of their design discovery.
Outcomes
ViVA reported on feasible work system factors contributing to injury causation. Additionally, the ViVA team submitted recommendations for river ferry design improvements.
