Context
In the education sector, teachers and principals manage excessive workloads, often working more than their substantive salaried or paid hours. This impacts poorly on their health and wellbeing. It causes staff attrition, making it difficult to attract and retain talented staff. This affects teaching and learning outcomes for students.
Challenge
A school-based education provider wanted to understand how teachers and principals spent their time and how they viewed this time expenditure. Further, they wanted to understand the impacts to their health and wellbeing to inform their improved job design strategies.
Approach
The ViVA human factors team examined scientific literature to understand industry trends in workload, work stressors, and attrition patterns. The team attended a valid representative sample of schools, meeting with teaching and principal staff to understand their diverse experiences.
ViVA used software solutions to conduct task-based evaluations including time studies, perceived work efficiency opportunities, energising activities, and stressful tasks. The team applied cost analytics to this data.

Outcomes
ViVA identified sex-based, age-based, and tenured distinctions on the attrition patterns of teachers, and the contributing factors to this attrition rate. The job design studies produced meaningful, agile data on work efficiency opportunities to help the school district realise millions of dollars of annual savings through targeted job re-design strategies.
