Hazardous Manual Task Training - the Sunshine Coast

Strain and Sprain - Musculoskeletal Disorder – arising from human exertion energy in the workplace accounted for over half of the value of Workers Compensation Claims, number of days lost from work, and absences that lasted over six months in Queensland in 2011/2012. Strain or sprain injuries accounted for almost a third (31.2%) of all injuries lodged that financial year.

Viva Health At Work, through our ViWork programs in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, provides contextualized hazardous manual task training. This has been known in industry as manual handling training.

Viva Health At Work has developed training to help workplaces meet requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act of 201, Queensland Hazardous Manual Tasks Code of Practice 2011 and the Queensland How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks Code of Practice 2011.

Participants learn about the biodynamics of their body with applied anatomy and physiology, the interface of person-equipment-environment, an introduction to the science of participatory ergonomics, manual task risk controls, hazard identification, a hierarchy of controls, and smart work strategies.

Hazardous manual task training is provided in Sunshine Coast – Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Coolum, and Noosa; north to Gympie, Maryborough and Bundaberg; Brisbane; and Gold Coast. We have provided services in Far North Queensland – Townsville, Cardwell, Tully, Innisfail, Cairns, and remote such as Chillagoe and will travel upon request.

Our trainers are certified workplace assessors and trainers (TAE 40110) and qualified health care professionals.

ViWork training in Hazardous Manual Tasks is offered in four sections to help workers: LEARN – MANAGE – DO:

  • Section 1: Hazardous Manual Tasks: define manual tasks and hazardous manual tasks
  • Section 2: Safety as a Priority: Take 5 and Safe 4: our culture of awareness
  • Section 3: Applied Anatomy and Physiology: as it affects work practice and job tasks
  • Section 4: Risk Management application: Top-Tier Hierarchy of Controls

To provide contextualized and customised hazardous manual task training, our trainers will visit your worksite, consult and engage with workers, observe tasks performed, take photos and video imagery, and populate training material with these images. We care more about how your workers think and apply sound risk management principles on an on-going basis than how they lift a box and we understand fully that hazards must be substantiated, escalated for risk, and controls are often complex. For example, DID YOU KNOW that workers are three times more likely to sustain an injury with awkward or forceful exertion when LOWERING an item versus LIFTING? Or three times more likely to sustain an injury with egress (truck exit) versus ingress? Our training is tailored to meet specific job demands in your industry. Training is provided ON-SITE or, if you prefer, as part of a safety training day in a suitable training location.

Mandatory training is often difficult to engage workers but in June 2014 this training was provided to 45 workers at a civil and road construction firm and this was the collective feedback:

  • 98% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with effectiveness of the session
  • 100% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the style and delivery was quality
  • 100% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the were encouraged to participate a group or individual level
  • 98% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with that they learned something new
  • 98% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the material will be useful to their ongoing work or career
This was very well presented; excellent application and very useful for my work.
Your trainer was fabulous; energetic, compassionate, and really understood our work.
Excellent – why do we not do more of this in high school and our job training?
