Context

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are a prevalent cause of worker injury, ill-health, and productivity loss across all industries.

Challenge

A local government organisation needed to comply with their legislative obligations and educate their staff on risk management practices for work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

Approach

The ViVA human factors and ergonomics team conducted contemporary, contextualised training workshops on manual task risk management strategies. The training included imagery and storytelling reflecting real-world scenarios of distinct business units throughout the local government business units. The highly interactive education focused on biomechanics, injury causation, hazard identification, integrated risk factors, determining acute and cumulative injury risk, and implementing risk prevention methods. The participants formed small groups to engage in design-led, practical problem solving to mitigate risks arising from their work demands.

Outcomes

ViVA provided an average of 45 training workshops sessions per annum for three years, certifying the training competency of more than 2800 local government workers to see a problem, report a problem, and fix a problem within their work teams. These sessions generated reports of at least four new hazard scenarios each session, more than 540 total, supporting the health and safety teams in their hazard identification and reporting, and informing them of new work re-design opportunities.
