Context
A quality and effective bus operator cab design is important to ensure driver safety, comfort, operational efficiency, and technological integration.
Challenge
A local government planned to procure and integrate new battery-electric buses in their local public transit system offerings. They required advice on the design and functional specifications of the operator’s cab.
Approach
The ViVA human factors team synthesised scientific literature, industry standards, guidance material, and ViVA’s previous job analysis on a similar bus operator role. The team worked with extended reality partners, ran workshops with project managers, operators, and maintainers. ViVA ran mock-up modelling and simulation sessions with operators and managers, at times integrating these strategies with the extended reality partners.
Outcomes
ViVA developed a detailed report on the risk and performance requirements for the bus operator, crafting person-centred and systems-oriented design specifications for a new batter electric bus cab.
