Context
In response to the pandemic to control communicate disease transmission, the government and organisations mandated home and remote work. These work from home mandates reduce office congestion to protect workers.
Challenge
A government agency required their employees to work from home. To support their workforce, the organisation provided laptops, monitor stands, and small external keyboards. Despite these provisions, an employee experienced discomfort in their neck and back while working from home, which impacted their well-being and productivity.
Approach
ViVA conducted a video-call virtual assessment involving interviews, remote observation, task analysis, and review of their work history. The employee viewed ViVA’s online interactive case study, ViOffice, to learn about general workstation setup ideas before this assessment. Upon reviewing the initial setup, the ergonomics advisor identified the monitor was positioned too high, causing the worker strain. The ergonomist advised on proper monitor positioning, instructing the worker to make adjustments to the setup, including use of double monitor setup, adding adjustable arms for better viewing, and introducing focal task lighting. Additionally, they advised on therapeutic exercises for the neck and upper back were recommended.
Outcomes
Within two weeks of implementing the new ergonomic setup the employee’s discomfort was resolved and they reported on their improved productivity. The organisation adopted subscription-based access to the ViOffice interactive case study for all employees via their learning management system.
