Context

Assistant in Nursing (AIN) staff are vital to quality aged care. To ensure sustainable operations, providers must also care for their carers. This is critical amid staffing shortages and an ageing population.

Challenge

AIN staff face competing demands and confronting behaviours. A leading provider sought to explore work design, focusing on musculoskeletal and mental health risks arising from manual tasks and occupational violence. The aim was to reveal role risks and identify redesign opportunities.

Approach

ViVA examined AIN roles across their manual, cognitive, and psychosocial task components and exposure to occupational violence. The review combined literature, site-based evidence, qualitative insights, and ergonomic risk assessment tools.

Outcomes

ViVA’s integrated health and environmental risk assessments highlighted the physical, cognitive, and emotional demands of AIN work. Recommendations grounded in user experience, design thinking, and evidence-based practice, aligned with the provider’s vision and values to support structured job redesign and sustainable solutions.
