Context

Airport security plays a crucial role in maintaining aviation safety, with their primary responsibility to prevent prohibited items from entering aircrafts. This involves multiple layers of checks, such as scanning passengers and luggage, and implementing procedures that ensure the safety and security of the airport, airline staff, and travellers.

Challenge

Domestic Terminal Cabin and Checked Baggage Screening Staff required a comprehensive review of their procedures to assist in reducing workplace injury risk factors. A detailed assessment was required to design roles that minimise the risk of injury and optimise shift schedules to reduce burnout.

Approach

The ViVA human factors and ergonomics team conducted an extensive review of scientific literature, health and safety data, and shift rosters. They collected data through manual task assessments, observed workflows, and studied real-time procedures during a site visit to cabin and checked luggage areas. The team also conducted semi-structured interviews with staff and management to gain insights into the role demands and employee concerns.

Outcomes

ViVA developed a comprehensive Work Design Report, including a Job Analysis and Job Capacity Checklist. These documents identified physical, cognitive, and psychosocial risk factors and are now used by the organization for recruitment, training, and risk assessment. ViVA’s recommendations included workstation re-design, procedural changes, and environmental changes to temper noise and improve air circulation to reduce work exposure risks. Additionally, they proposed shift modifications to allow adequate recovery time, reducing psychosocial health risks.
