Context
Effective road tyre recycling benefits communities through reduced landfill waste with fewer pollutants while deterring illegal dumping activity. There are economic benefits from these practices through job creation and business growth. Recycled tyre materials are used in road construction, playground surfaces, and public infrastructure projects. Tyre recycling supports sustainable construction and infrastructure, improves public health and safety, reduces mosquito and pest breeding, and reduces fire hazards. Recycling supports circular economy practices, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and promotes innovation.
Challenge
A tyre recycling company required assistance to address the investigations of health and safety regulators prompted by a report from an injured worker.
Approach
ViVA provided the task analysis and integrated risk assessment findings on critical work tasks, including loading, unloading, and lacing tyres. They met with and interviewed the management, safety advisors and workers, observing work in the natural environment and simulated activities, and measuring key task factors to inform their reports.
Outcomes
ViVA provided the integrated risk assessments on fundamental tyre recycling tasks, design advice on task re-design, and predictive analytics on the risk reduction associated with these changes. They created and delivered manual task education toolbox talks and drafted the safe work method statements to support the contracted safety teams.
