Context
Occupational physicians are instrumental in the health monitoring and intervention of workers to detect and manage occupational disease. Their skills are in demand for periodic health assessments, fitness-for-duty assessments, and return to work assessments, while monitoring worker exposures to hazardous substances. They may also plan and oversee workplace emergency responses. The high cognitive task demandss and significant workloads for these in-demand healthcare professionals can cause them stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout.
Challenge
A continuing education accrediting provider and professional association required stimulating, meaningful, and engaging content to inspire occupational physicians during their annual training events, while providing valid continuing education content.
Approach
The ViVA human factors principal strategist facilitated an interactive design-sprint workshop. The focus was education on work re-design, learning design techniques applied to reimagining the design of their job roles for high-energy and optimum performance – caring for the carer.
Outcomes
The event was rated one of the most popular of their two day continuing education blitz with the physicians stating that they were more acutely aware about how to apply design practice in the realm on work after the workshop. They appreciated the case focus on themselves and spoke about the realities of their work.
