Context
Sleep and fatigue are common issues affecting productivity, health, and well-being. Businesses have an added challenge when supporting distributed teams in their health and wellbeing needs. Additionally, in the utilities sector, shiftwork can contribute to these sleep disturbances and fatigue complaints.
Challenge
A utilities client identified widespread concerns raised by their diverse staff about their disturbed sleep patterns and subsequent fatigue. The challenge was to provide effective strategies that staff could implement across a geographically dispersed and remote workforce to improve sleep quality and fatigue effects.
Approach
ViVA developed online webinar education material, addressing the impacts of sleep deprivation and fatigue on health and work performance. The session engaged participants through live Q&A and reflection exercises, encouraging them to share their sleep challenges and discuss their work contexts. Topics covered included sleep hygiene, managing blue light exposure, circadian rhythm alignment, shift work strategies, work allocation broadly, and balancing family commitments with work demands.
Outcomes
More than 100 online participants gained valuable insights and practical strategies to prioritise sleep, manage fatigue, and energise themselves. The feedback was rated highly positive, with increased awareness and motivation to implement changes, such as reducing digital exposure before bed, adjusting sleep routines to suit shift work, and managing work activity to support variable energy levels. The seminar successfully raised awareness about the importance of sleep for mental health, social relationships, and overall workplace safety.
