Context
Manufacturing, warehousing, distributing, and retailing of compressed gases in cylinders pose several health hazards for workers, primarily due to the high pressure and the nature of the gases involved. These hazards include physical risks, chemical risks, and environmental factors.
Challenge
A global gas cylinder manufacturer, warehouser, distributor, and retailor of compressed gas cylinders wanted to address their staff’s most significant health and safety hazard exposures, educating their operations on work re-design strategies.
Approach
The ViVA human factors team visited multiple states to observe work and interview staff, combined with a review of scientific and industry literature. ViVA conducted risk assessments and determined hazard trends.
Outcomes
ViVA determined acute and cumulative manual task, cognitive, and psychosocial hazard exposures for retail, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution gas cylinder staff. They provided recommendations with data-drive risk reduction calculations on intervention strategies, including environmental, equipment, job design, and training to help the organisation prioritise their work re-design.
