Context
The Off-The-Road (OTR) tyre industry serves heavy-duty plant used in sectors like mining, construction, agriculture, and heavy industry operations. The tyres are significantly larger, heavier, and more complex with split rim configurations, presenting unique handling, fatal hazard exposures, and maintenance challenges.
Challenge
A mining association was keen to educate the industry on the fatal hazard exposures associated with OTR tyre handling. They sponsored ViVA’s human factors research on human factors and systems design in OTR tyre handling, while desiring an accessible means to communicate the findings to the industry – especially equipment designers, tyre technicians, statutory engineers, and mining operators.
Approach
After developing animated OTR tyre handling hazard education with research technology project partners and industry, ViVA led the research on the integration of tablet-based education media in tyre maintenance operations. This included evaluating the transfer of conceptual learning embedded in training modules to tyre technicians in the field, and the usability of the media in real-world operations.
Outcomes
ViVA published research on OTR Tyre handling hazard education in mining, outlining the methods to ensure competent knowledge transfer of key content to end users, while effectively integrating new technologies and learning materials into existing work systems.
